glTail.rb visualizes the contents of server logfiles in realtime using 3D animation to illustrate the behavior of network traffic. The visualization engine uses OpenGL to produce 3D blobs representing website hits, whereby small blobs indicate requests with a short response time, and big blobs show requests that took longer (see screenshot). The blob color indicates which site the request came from. glTail.rb is open source software (link to code), and includes parsers for several kinds of server logfiles, including the Apache web server, Microsoft's IIS web server, Rails, and the Postfix email server. The homepage has a nice video of the tool in action.
