When discussing how user interfaces might evolve, it is important to distinguish between changing the look-and-feel of a computing environment, and the more fundamental issue of changing how an environment stores user data. Independently of new ways for users to actually interact with the computer, it may be possible to make computing more efficient by allowing the hierarchical directory (i.e. "file folder") approach used by most current file systems to evolve into a more intuitive model based on relational or temporal structures, whereby users no longer have to reference their data strictly in terms of unique file names. This Byte Magazine editorial discusses some of the key issues in the debate about how file systems should change, focusing in particular on Hans Reiser's (of ReiserFS fame) ideas about namespaces.
