Greg Weiss writes "Given the switching costs of learning a new interface, a new interface has to either be pretty entertaining or efficiency-enhancing. Cars provide and intriguing platform for future UIs, for two reasons: 1) the overall price tag and packaging can accomodate higher-end technology than low-end consumer devices, and 2) people waste vast amounts of time in their cars while commuting. Heck, even if I spent less time getting lost or being in traffic that'd be a significant improvement. Along these lines, you might be interested in this month's Scientific American article on new car interfaces (aka "automative telematics"), their challenges and potential. Safety isn't a desktop UI feature, but it sure is one in that problem domain!"
