Surfing Geography In Your Browser
posted by Editor on Friday September 28, @08:14PM
Geographic Interfaces GeoTools is a Java-based mapping toolkit developed by the Center for Computational Geography that allows maps to be viewed interactively on web browsers without the need for dedicated server-side support. The source code is here, and there are a bunch of demos that run within the browser here (the applets take a while to load, at least on a dial-up modem, so be patient). My favorite is the map that shows everything there is to know about the village of Straithwaite, UK, which really shows how a GIS interface works. There is also an effective interactive map of the world.
