Playing Quake In Text Mode
posted by Editor on Friday September 28, @07:43AM
Command Line Interfaces Textmode Quake (ttyquake) uses plain text characters for its rendering, allowing you to play Quake at a text terminal, in an xterm, or over a telnet session. It remains unclear just why one would want to do this, but the screenshots are beautiful! The source code is available here (FTP). The port was done with AA-lib, a portable ascii art GFX library (see these images for more examples of its capabilities).

The screenshots have a very matrix-y feel to them. I could see a use for this, although it would probably give me a headache pretty quickly.

That is one of the greatest inventions I have ever seen! Linux needs more textmode games so I don't need to boot up X. :)
