Textmode Quake (ttyquake) uses plain text characters for its rendering, allowing you to play Quake at a text terminal, in an xterm, or over a telnet session. It remains unclear just why one would want to do this, but the screenshots are beautiful! The source code is available here (FTP). The port was done with AA-lib, a portable ascii art GFX library (see these images for more examples of its capabilities).
