Hitachi Introducing Wearable Internet Appliance
posted by Editor on Tuesday September 25, @02:22PM
Wearable Computer Interfaces This article in New Scientist talks about a new wearable computer that Hitachi will introduce later this year for about $2,000. The Wearable Internet Appliance consists of a palm-sized computer and a head-mounted display that fits over one eye like half a pair of sunglasses and is equivalent to a virtual 13-inch monitor (see picture). A small handheld controller allows the user to scroll around the screen and make selections (here is a good FAQ about how the device is used). The system uses Hitachi's proprietary RISC processor and runs Microsoft's Windows CE operating system. In the US, it will be marketed by Xybernaut, one of the leading vendors of wearable computers.

This Hitachi system was mentioned in one of the wearables lists I'm on. Everyone agreed that the WinCE aspect was kinda painful, but that the HUD had definite hack potential; the chance we might be able to get our hands on mass-produced replacement parts instead of forking out for the whole system.

There is hope though! Perhaps the newly discussed Sega Dreamcast Linux hack can be of use and/or adapted to this Hitachi wearable.?.
