Few visions of the web's future are as compelling - and controversial - as the Metaverse described in Neal Stephenson's novel Snow Crash. While it would seem intuitive to navigate the web in virtual reality, representing cyberspace spatially does not necessarily take advantage of the web's real strengths, i.e. location-independence and non-hierarchical data relationships. The effectiveness of 3D user interfaces also continues to be hotly debated.
Nonetheless, Snow Crash has captured the imagination of countless readers since it was published in 1992. This speculative essay on GameSpy by a Quake developer objectively examines some of the challenges in reaching a Metaverse-like environment, sketching out step-by-step a path from first-generation, user-programmable massively multiplayer games arriving next year, up to a single network of standardized, open-source Metagames in 2015.
