Visualizing System Load With Bubbles
posted by Editor on Monday September 17, @11:44PM
Visual User Interfaces The Bubbling Load Monitor is a visual system CPU and memory load monitor that displays something that looks like a vial containing water. The water level indicates how much memory is in use. The color of the liquid indicates how much swap space is used (watery blue means none and angry red means all). The system CPU load is indicated by bubbles floating up through the liquid; lots of bubbles means high CPU load.

Bubbling interace vs. monitoring with sound (Score:1)

I think I like the monitoring networks with sound method better than these bubbles. I see potential in it though as opposed to more traditional "top" style monitors.

I think it could be more useful if it was modified to have bubbles float up thr root window (background). Then one would not have to look at a small monitor on a panel, but could get a sort of subconcious feel for what is going. This would bring it almost on par with Peep for nonintrusiveness balanced with usefulness. It impossible for the eye to truly look at two things at once, but the ear can hear many things at once. Peep takes advantage of this. I think the bubbles are about as close to getting the eye to see more than one thing at once as one can get. And I think running them in the root window might be neat. Then again, this might be distracting.

How about a screensaver version of the bubbles too?

How about an actual fishtank with a real bubble generator hanging off your parallel port?

To me monitoring with sound should always be present but subject to volume change in the same way that I should always be able to reduce the size of the monitoring visualization or place it elsewhere on the screen. This is usually more important for a potentially "big" monitoring visualization like lavaps than with bubblemon though. By the way, lavaps should be taken into consideration as a more impressive, more versatile but more "bulky" monitoring app than bubblemon, anytime monitoring is considered.
