How To See Music
posted by Editor on Monday September 17, @11:25PM
Data Visualization This article appeared a few months ago in the now-defunct FEED, profiling Andy O’Meara, who developed the G-Force and WhiteCap music visualization plug-ins for the WinAmp and iTunes MP3 players. For those who haven’t seen G-Force and WhiteCap at work, they automatically generate hallucinogenic patterns that are eerily synchronized with the music being played. The interesting thing about Andy himself is that he is currently qualifying as a submarine officer aboard a US Navy attack sub, and spends weeks at sea between coding. He is also a devout Christian, and talks openly about the religious inspiration behind his programs (it turns out that G-Force stands for "Godforce.")

OK, now what we need is something to generate music based on a moving image.

I wonder what it would be like to do the same thing with a Phantom or other tactile interface. Something you could put your hand or body against and feel. Or a sheet of pulses representing different soudn sources.

I'm not a robot like you. I don't like having disks crammed into me... unless they're Oreos, and then only in the mouth. -- Fry
