Mainstream Media Declares Dominance of Mobile Computing

The NY Times points out that there will be 6.8 billion humans on the planet this year, and five billion cellphone subscriptions. 80 percent of the world's population has available cell coverage. The San Jose Mercury News declares that the era of PC dominance is officially over, as shown by Microsoft's willingness to build a new operating system for smart phones from the ground up. Global market share data for smart phone operating systems in 2009 compared to 2008 shows that iPhone tripled share to nearly 20%, and Android is up nearly 500% to 4.5%. So what do you get when you buy a fake iPhone from a stranger in a bar?

Mattel's Twitter dog collar tweets when your pet moves, barks or growls, while sensors attached to taxis help other drivers find a parking space. Despite all the work being done on next-generation interactive devices based on gestures and brain-computer interfaces, the computer mouse is here to stay (at least for a while). And just where is your hand pushing that mouse anyway? The MousePath tool tracks mouse position over time and plots the most frequent touchpoints, producing images that resemble modern art.

mobile market share != app availability (Score:0)

this article [zdnet.com] compares the number of apps available for each platform with its market share, and shows that there are some disconnects. it looks like the size of apple's app store is correlated with its market share gains, but it remains to be seen whether the same trend will play out with android. moreover, the relative lack of windows mobile apps does not seem to have affected microsoft's market share.
