The Hitachi Human Interaction Lab has developed this prototype of a WaterScape interface for handheld devices, which represents data as virtual bubbles that move around the screen depending on how the device is tilted. Users interact with the system by guiding bubbles toward the center of the screen, where they burst and reveal their contents. To reset the device to its original state, users simply shake it (see picture). While there have been numerous prototypes of tilting interfaces that take advantage of accelerometers in devices (see Compaq's Rock 'n' Scroll interface), WaterScape is notable for combining a handheld form factor with calm computing, in which users reduce information overload by selecting what information is at the center of their attention and what information is peripheral.
