The Challenges of Developing Ubiquitous Computing Interfaces
posted by Editor on Monday May 01, @06:32PM
Ambient Computing This article in ACM Queue highlights the challenges of developing interfaces for the newest generation of embedded systems. The article points out that it is often assumed that ubiquitous computing involves moving as much functionality as possible into hardware, with simple and reliable software. In fact, though, market forces are pushing developers in the other direction, toward more complex software. Developing this software is made more challenging by the fact that many embedded operating systems do not provide memory protection between processes, and use cooperative rather than preemptive multitasking. It is also difficult to make assumptions about I/O capabilities in these devices.
