MSNBC has a story about the Geospatial Decision Making (GeoDec) project at the University of Southern California, which combines digital maps with background data on the shown areas to create coherent 3D visualizations of the real world (see screenshot). GeoDec blends data from services such as Google Earth and MSN Virtual Earth, using two different aerial images of the same area to add perspective, with data such as street addresses, real-estate tax assessments, and phone numbers to create comprehensive 3D visualizations of a geographic region (see system schematic). Systems like GeoDec start to approximate the Mirror Worlds described by David Gelernter.
