Tactile3D is a Windows program that allows users to organize files and directories in a 3D space. Users get the impression of exploring a vast virtual landscape, with each directory being a new world in which they can roam around and place objects where they want. Structurally, Tactile 3D uses a tree to represent the entire filesystem. Users can enter various spaces like hard drives, removable media, and directories. Each object gives clues of its contents by emitting sounds and mapping thumbnails and icons onto certain faces. Other cues include a faster rotation rate for recently accessed content, different lighting for read-only files, and variation in collision sound effects based on file size (see screenshot). This essay and interview reveals some of the thinking behind Tactile3D's design. A new version was just released that offers better support for viewing, organizing, and listening to digital audio.
